Episode 2 takes us to Wexler's Deli, sharing a delicious and epic meal with two experts and emerging voices in food circles, Liz Alpern and Jeffrey Yoskowitz. Their collaboration as The Gefilteria, based in a Brooklyn kitchen, is already served at the best tables and credited with culinary cultural empowerment. Their recent work, The Gefilte Manifesto has helped establish Liz and Jeffrey as voices of food authenticity and ownership.
In this episode we eat. A lot. We talk about their epic meal at the table of the Deli Man himself, Ziggy Gruber in Houston, Texas. But mostly we talk about culture and food, identity and food, the loss of place and how food can help you hold onto its memory. Liz has a revelation about her food work over smoked white fish. How radical it is to return to old ways. And how the gefilte fish crisis that gave this team a window into how to share Jewish culture with the world.
A very special thank you to Mike and Micah, and Jenn at Wexler's Deli for treating us like royalty. It was delicious.
